THE GEORGE ORWELL FREE HOUSE
Pub refurbishment, 2010
For | Soap bars Ltd
Location | Islington, London
This pub takes its name from the author of nineteen eighty-four , George Orwell , who lived in the neighbourhood during the 1940’s.
The design concept was developed around the strong original features of the pub. The light and airy space is accentuated by original metal columns which add to the industrial feel. The delicate patterns on the ceiling are emphasized by the use of a light colour treatment, when lit these patterns cast shadows animating the ceiling.
Echo‘s of Orwell’s life can be found in the space, through the use of newspapers (he was well known for his journalistic career), an old typewriter, books and retro futuristic imaginary.
The furniture complements this simple and relaxed space creating different areas while at the same time allowing an open view to the large projection screen.
