Since the Portuguese first arrived in Japan in 1543 they were known as Namban-jin. The art that arises from this contact is called Namban as seen in the screens that belong to the collection of the MNAA - National Museum of Ancient Art in Lisbon, Portugal. This was the inspiration for a set of objects especially commissioned for the Museum Shops.
