We were entrusted by QRER to organise and lead the “Master–Apprentice” course in Sarnadas, as part of the Magallanes_ICC project. The aim was to pass on traditional esparto weaving techniques to a new generation of artisans through direct learning from four local masters.
Over five weeks, participants learned practical basketry and decorative techniques using esparto grass, an ancestral material once vital to the region’s economy. The programme also featured a guest master from Spain, fostering cultural exchange and expanding the creative scope.
This initiative highlighted the ecological and creative potential of esparto, supporting future sustainable craft ventures in the Algarve’s interior.
